The Dry Summer Ahead: Why Rainwater Storage Is No Longer Optional

On 1 September 2026, the South African Weather Service issued a warning that deserves everyone's attention. A strong El Niño is developing in the Pacific, and SAWS expects it to bring below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures across most of the country from October through to January 2027. Their forecast goes further: this event is likely to intensify and could become the strongest in living memory.
For anyone who remembers the last severe El Niño, that phrasing should land with some weight.
What El Niño actually means for your water
El Niño is a warming of the sea surface in the central Pacific that reshapes weather patterns worldwide. For southern Africa, the pattern is well established. During these events, South Africa typically receives below-average rainfall, and in extreme cases, harsh drought. The two most damaging in regional memory, 1982/83 and 2015/16, brought widespread drought across the region.
It's worth being honest about the caveat, because a good forecast always carries one. SAWS notes that not every El Niño produces drought. The very strong 1997/98 event was actually associated with slightly above-normal rainfall over parts of the summer rainfall region. So this is a question of probability, not certainty.
But that is precisely the point. Water security is a risk-management exercise, and the responsible position is to prepare for the most likely outcome, not to gamble on the exception.
Why storage is the decision that matters
When rainfall drops, two things happen in sequence. Dam levels fall, and municipalities respond with restrictions. In Gauteng, where supply is already under sustained pressure, a dry summer doesn't announce itself gently. It arrives as reduced pressure, rotational cuts, and the quiet realisation that the tap is no longer something you can take for granted.
A properly designed rainwater harvesting and storage system changes your position entirely. It lets you capture water during the rain you do get, hold it through the dry stretches, and draw on your own reserve when the municipal supply falters. The household that installed storage in September is in a very different position to the one scrambling for a tank in January, when demand spikes and lead times stretch.
The principle is simple: the time to build a reserve is before you need it, not during the shortage.
What a considered system looks like
Effective storage is more than a tank in the corner of the garden. A system worth installing is sized to your actual consumption and your roof's catchment potential, so you capture enough to matter and store enough to last. It includes first-flush diversion to keep the initial dirty runoff out of your supply, and filtration matched to how you intend to use the water, whether that's irrigation, geyser feed, or filtered supply for the whole home.
Done correctly, storage isn't a grudge purchase for a bad year. It's infrastructure that pays back every season, and quietly earns its keep the moment restrictions arrive.

The forecast may yet soften. SAWS updates its seasonal outlook every month, and there is still time for the picture to evolve. But the smart money doesn't wait for certainty that never quite comes. It prepares while preparation is still cheap and unhurried.
